Private gardens
Contemplation Garden
A private garden space away from the
chaos of the main family area, incorporating
a labyrinth designed by the client. Currently being built, this
garden will give space for both escaping and
entertaining. It includes a winding brick path, the noise of gently flowing water,
seating for any time of day, ornamental planting, vegetables, fruit, herbs and a firebowl on the terrace.
Long Narrow Garden
An unusually long and narrow garden, this urban jungle was cleared and given a curving geometric structure to give an impression of increased width. The client’s brief was fulfilled with low maintenance planting and use of Japanese-inspired design elements and natural materials.
Shady City Courtyard
This small north facing courtyard was designed to contain a mix of evergreen plants and plants for seasonal interest. Wall-mounted frames, scented flowering climbers, contemporary trellis and subtle lighting make a striking area for outdoor entertaining.
Front gardens
Children’s Front Garden
The owners of this front garden wanted a space in which their two young children could play after school. Fun eco ‘bean’ paving shapes, a permeable mulch made from large pebbles and lots of planting to look after keeps Lily and Jacob very happy.
Permeable Front Garden
This large front garden had a lawn that turned into a quagmire each winter. The owners were keen to have parking for two cars, keeping a large proportion of planting and permeable surfaces. Recently completed, the garden includes permeable sub-base, granite setts jointed with permeable mortar, and recycled crushed terracotta to match the house brick. Newly planted beds will soon fill out and green the space.
Blooming Front Garden
Even a tiny front garden can make an amazing difference to a whole street.
Show gardens
Hampton Court 2009
A front garden featuring a green roof and a rain garden to absorb rainwater and reduce the risk of flash flooding, as well as a rain chain and water butt to store water. The rear wall was made from 100% recyclable, FSC approved Accoya timber (50 year durability softwood) from renewable resources. With thanks to our sponsors Hadlow College and Westgate Joinery, and suppliers Hot Metal Engineering.
See also the Media section of this website for BBC coverage.
Hampton Court 2008
Our first show garden, designed together with Catherine Kenny, for the charity Samaritans. The garden represented themes which are key to Samaritans ethos, including face-to-face communication, giving time to listen, and providing an oasis of calm.
The garden was built in conjunction with Greenroom Landscaping.
Public spaces
Beecholme Estate
The first phase of this innovative planting project has recently been completed. Together with the award-winning Grass Roof Company, we have produced a planting scheme featuring more garden plants and wildflowers than traditional amenity planting and look forward to continued work to transform this Clapton housing estate.
Green roofs
Roof Terrace
This 6m x 4m roof terrace is both a green roof and an outdoor space for the homeowners use. GRP fibreglass waterproofing was fitted, followed by a drainage layer, then substrate at 50mm - 150mm deep. Planting is mostly Lindum Turf’s ready grown green roof mat. Contemporary slatted wooden screens and ivy screens are ideal lightweight boundary structures for a green roof.
With thanks to our suppliers Lindum Turf and Bauder.
Hampton Court 2009
Instead of the usual sedum mat, this roof uses mounded substrates and a mixture of wildflowers, evergreen sedums, grasses and perennials to create a much more interesting and varied effect. Used as a carport, it represents a great way to replace planting space lost to parking in a front garden. It needs no extra watering and only twice-yearly maintenance.
See also the Media section of the website for BBC coverage.
With thanks to our suppliers Lindum Turf.
Wat Tyler Centre
Designed to mimic the shapes of nearby Vange Creek, this green roof was constructed by the Grass Roof Company. It features mounded substrates of differing types to encourage greater biodiversity, and several insect habitat towers, rope coils and log piles. The roof is viewed from a glass corridor and will be used as an educational resource for visitors.
Pooles Park School
Currently going through planning and building control, this school roof will be transformed into an outdoor classroom over the summer holidays. Green roofs are a great way of introducing extra planting area. See also the Schools section of our website.
Contemporary New Build
We acted as consultants on this green roof on an architect designed contemporary house, helping advise on substrates, contractors and fall arrest systems. The next step is to produce a planting design for the roof that will complement the garden, using plants that will tolerate the harsher conditions on a roof.
Shed Green Roof
Even a modest shed can be transformed with the addition of a green roof. This one uses lightweight Leca clay and green waste compost substrate, with planting consisting of herbs and drought tolerant perennials. A great weekend project that we are happy to supply materials for - a great DIY guide for small scale green roofs is available to download from the Grass Roof Company.
Schools
Purfleet Playground
This fun design incorporates a green roof story-telling hut, a vegetable growing area with play tunnels, a sandpit (with backdrop mural by a local artist), wetpour to create a colourful playground surface and Ecoscape recycled mulch to provide a practical surface around the vegetable beds. Even the fencing is interesting - consisting of sections of recycled crushed glass, recycled plastics, local timber and insect habitat panels. Constructed by the Grass Roof Company to their usual excellent standards.
Norris Bank Workshop
This one day workshop at Norris Bank School together with John Little of the Grass Roof Company enabled the children to come up with ideas to transform a section of the grounds outside the school entrance. Wendy then produced a design based on their ideas, and the garden will be built during the summer holidays. See the About section of our website for more details about available workshops and talks.
